Obituary for Francis D. "Frank" O'Connor
Francis D. “Frank” O’Connor, 77, of Auburn, died peacefully on Monday October 14, 2019 at the Dodge Park Rest Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Frank was the son of Dennis F. and Frances M. (Sterner) O’Connor and was raised in Winthrop. In 1966, he graduated from Norwich University in Vermont with a degree in Civil Engineering. He entered the U.S. Army six months later as a lieutenant and served two years in Germany. In 1968, he married the love of his life, Lorna R. (Melillo) O’Connor, and moved to Auburn. Frank worked for CDM Smith, a consulting firm in Boston for 41 years, overseeing the design and construction of sewer and water treatment plants – a job he truly loved. In 1983, Frank received his Master’s degree in Construction Management from WPI.
Frank leaves behind his devoted wife of 51 years, Lorna; his children, Christopher O’Connor and his wife Pamela of Arlington, Timothy O’Connor and his wife Elizabeth of Manchester, CT; his grandchildren, Kate, Molly, Alena, Brendan, and Baby Teddy; his sister-in-law, Barbara Davis; his brother-in-law, Stanley Melillo; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Margaret Hopper.
Frank loved to travel, especially to Lake Winnipesaukee every summer, with his wife and family. He enjoyed gardening, making his own beer, and country Western dancing. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was their biggest cheerleader at all sporting events and spent many hours helping them construct their annual gingerbread houses, and no one could hide Easter eggs quite like their “Papa.”
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Frank’s family between 4:00 and 7:00 PM on Friday October 18, 2019 at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn, MA. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday October 19, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Street North, Auburn, MA, followed by burial with military honors in Hillside Cemetery.
