Obituary for Alden G. Johnson

Alden G. Johnson passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, February 28th, following a period of declining health.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth A. (Connors) Johnson, two sons – Mark and his wife, Amanda, of Hopkinton and Peter and his wife, Heather, of Arnold, Maryland – and three loving grandchildren, Lucas, Malcolm, and Corinne. Alden also leaves two sisters – Lucille Sampson and her husband, John, of Leominster and Priscilla Chesna and her husband, Joseph, of Jefferson – as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Alden was born and raised in Quinsigamond Village, Worcester. He graduated from South High School and received his physical education degree from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in education from Worcester State University. He taught physical education in the Worcester Public Schools for 37 years, retiring in 1999.

Alden had a zeal for life, for people, conversation, and laughter, for travel and, most of all, for his family. He enjoyed sports both as a participant and as a fan. He was a skilled basketball player and an accomplished golfer as a member of Holden Hills Country Club, Sterling Country Club, and, later, Hidden Cypress Golf Club in Bluffton, South Carolina. As a fan, he most loved the New England Patriots and the Michigan State Spartans, but he could get excited about any form of competition, whether in person or on television.

Alden and Elizabeth settled in Auburn, where they raised their two sons. Alden had a passion for travel and planning trips and, above all, for finding the perfect travel deal. Some of his favorite destinations included Disney World, Saratoga Springs, New York, and San Diego, California. Closer to home, and most especially, he cherished summer visits to the house on Lake Singletary in Sutton, where he and his family spent carefree days with his two sisters and their families.

A private funeral service for family members will be held on Thursday, March 4th at Britton- Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn.
