Obituary for Nandkumar Jayawant "Nandu" Marketkar
Nandkumar “Nandu” Jayawant Marketkar, 74, of Boylston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at Rose Monahan Hospice Home with his loving wife and son by his side.
Along with his devoted wife of 45 years, Jean M. (Verdolino) Marketkar, Nandu leaves their son, Neil N. Marketkar and his wife Marcy Ostberg, of Jamaica Plain; his grandchildren, Dylan and Bree Marketkar; his four surviving siblings Ulhas Marketkar, Sunita (Marketkar) Thakur, Neeta (Marketkar) Warty, Smita (Marketkar) Moghe; and many nieces and nephews.
Nandu was born in Dadar, Bombay (now Mumbai) in India, to the late Jayawant Lakshman Marketkar and Malati (Pathare) Marketkar. He graduated from Chabildas Boys High School in Dadar, before attending Ruia College of the University of Bombay, where he represented the university on the Cricket team and was a star player. Nandu then attended Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Engineering School in Andheri, Bombay, and began working at NELCO, a TATA company, as his first engineering position. He moved to the United States in 1973 to further his engineering education, then received his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Nandu was involved in founding several companies in his career beginning with Custom Computers and including NSI Logic and High-Speed Solutions, his latest being acquired by Intel. He retired as Executive Vice President at Intel.
In his free time, he loved cooking Indian food, mainly by remembering his mom’s cooking and recreating it. He self published a cookbook “Flavors of India for Tasty Palates” in remembrance of his mother. Nandu enjoyed studying Vedic and Hindu religions, and was a great follower of Sai Baba and his teachings. He also loved Indian classical music and Marathi songs.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Nandu’s family between 2 – 4:30 PM on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury, with a period of remembrances at 3:30 PM. Prior to the calling hours the family will hold a Pooja at 1:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome.
