Obituary for Edmund J. "Ed" Walsh

Edmund J. Walsh, 88, formerly of Auburn and most recently of the Overlook in Charlton, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Patricia A. (Brunette) Walsh, of Charlton; his devoted children: Rosemary W. Rotty and her husband Edmund, of Sturbridge, Eileen K. DeStasio and her husband Michael, of Wingdale, NY, Nancy W. Reid and her husband John, of Brimfield, and Thomas E. Walsh and his wife Michelle, of Billerica; his cherished grandchildren: Adeline and Emma Destasio, of Wingdale, NY, and step-grandchildren: Kiersten and Madison Callery, of Billerica; his brother, John Walsh and his wife Trudy, of Holden; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edmund was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Victoria Rose Walsh; his parents, Michael and Mary (Flaherty) Walsh; and his siblings Maureen Generelli, Michael Walsh, and George Walsh.

Edmund was born and raised in Worcester, graduating from Commerce High School. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Soley in the Mediterranean. During this time, he was a member of the drill team who performed on the Perry Como Show. Edmund began his lengthy career as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, serving downtown Worcester, making many friends, and retired after forty dedicated years.

He had a deep devotion to his faith, and was an active member of Saint Joseph’s Church of Auburn for over sixty years, where he was a lector and usher.

Edmund was a lifetime member of the YMCA of Worcester, where he loved keeping active and playing handball. He found great joy in vegetable gardening, was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He spent many years volunteering with the farmer’s market in the region.

He was a lover of music, but most especially Frank Sinatra and jazz – he even volunteered for a time at a local jazz radio station in Worcester. Ed loved Boston sports and rooting for his beloved Patriots. He was very proud of his Irish heritage. He also loved singing and dancing, so much so that he met his wife, Pat, for the first time at a dance hall.

His family will miss him deeply, especially his unwavering commitment to family, positive attitude, and sense of humor – he knew just how to get a smile out of someone and make you feel special.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (www.mda.org).

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Walsh family from 4 – 6 PM on Monday, May 15, 2023 at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central St., Auburn.
