Obituary for Joseph R. Long

Joseph R. “Joe” Long, 93, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2024 at Notre Dame Long Term Care, with his loving family at his bedside. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Anne E. (Wickstrom) Long, on November 16, 2020.

Joe leaves his loving children: Joanne M. (Long) Tonelli and her husband Mark, of Worcester, Robert J. Long and his wife Suzanne, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, and Denise B. (Long) Wall and her husband Richard, of Shrewsbury; eleven grandchildren: John, Kristina, Stephanie, Jennifer, Andrew, Renee, Christopher, Deanna, Matthew, Jacqueline, and Kirsten; eight great-grandchildren: Rudy, Molly, Lucy, Alexander, Russell, Reid, Hudson, and Lyla; along with many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Rita Paradis, Iris LeBrun, Ouida Long, Conrad Long, Margaret Jugas, and Frances Long.

Joe was born in Ft. Kent, Maine, son of the late Solomon and Evelyn (Beaulieu) Long. He was raised and educated in Maine, graduating from Junior College, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on February 14, 1951. Joe served his country proudly until his honorable discharge in 1955. He married his beloved Anne just one year later, and the pair moved to Shrewsbury in 1958 to raise their family.

Joe dedicated a long career to Wyman-Gordan where he worked as a Metallurgist.

In his free time, he enjoyed watching the Candle Pins for Cash TV Show (which he was proud to say he was featured on!). Joe was very active in Webelos and Cub Scouts, and was always hands-on with his kids and grandkids homework and activities.

All who knew Joe would attest to his hardworking nature, and how much he enjoyed yardwork! He was meticulous in every sense of the word.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Long family from 4 – 7 PM on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday, March 22nd at St. Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Tpke, Shrewsbury; burial and military honors will be held at Mountain View Cemetery.
